People often have questions about the types of symptoms that call for the help of a neurologist over another specialist or a general practitioner. We cover that question in this second part of our series, “FAQs About Neurology and Neurologists.” If you missed Part 1, which talks about what a neurologist is and does, click here.
What Symptoms Require a Neurologist?
There are a number of symptoms that can prompt someone to consider seeing a neurologist. Here are eight of the most common reasons (in no particular order) that new patients come to Neurology Associates:
Headaches: Persistent or severe headaches can be a sign of a number of neurological conditions, especially if they are severe, frequent, or accompanied by other symptoms like vision changes, neck pain, or nausea.
Seizures: Unexpected changes in behavior, muscle control, or consciousness can point to epilepsy or another neurological disorder.
Weakness or numbness: Sudden or progressive weakness or numbness in the face, arms, or legs can indicate a neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis, a stroke, or a peripheral nerve disorder.
Dizziness or balance problems: Unsteadiness, vertigo, or difficulty with coordination can be a sign of a problem with the inner ear or the brain.
Memory loss or confusion: Sudden or gradual changes in memory or cognitive abilities can signal the presence of conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or a traumatic brain injury.
Speech difficulties: Problems with speaking, such as slurred speech or difficulty finding or understanding words, can be a sign of a neurological condition such as a stroke or Parkinson's disease.
Vision problems: Sudden or gradual changes in vision, such as double vision or loss of peripheral vision, can suggest a neurological condition such as a stroke, a brain tumor, or an eye muscle disorder.
Pain: Chronic or severe pain, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as weakness or numbness, can be a sign of a neurological condition such as neuropathy or a spinal cord disorder.
What Is A Neurologist?
A neurologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the brain and nervous system. Neurology Associates Neuroscience Center staffs our clinics with a range of certified experts — neurologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, a counselor and naturopathic doctor, a physical therapist, and clinical psychologists — who help patients understand and work with their conditions. We offer complete outpatient neurological care in both of our clinics in Chandler and Mesa, Arizona.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, it is important to see a neurologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Call 480 800 4890 to schedule an appointment.
